The genera and species of
Cantharidae, Lampyridae and Lycidae
described by Gistel (1809-1873)

by

FABRIZIO FANTI

Abstract - Some of Gistel’s most important works on the Cantharidae, Lampyridae and Lycidae families are examined, with particular reference to the articles of 1834 where some genera are formally described, and 1831 and 1857 where some species are described. After careful study of the original descriptions, some names are synonymized or considered nomina dubia, and the following nomenclatural acts are proposed: Telephorus vorax Gistel, 1857 = Cantharis quadripunctata (O. F. Müller, 1776) n. syn.; Telephorus sticticus Gistel, 1857 = Metacantharis clypeata (Illiger, 1798) n. syn.; Telephorus cephalicus Gistel, 1857 = Podabrus alpinus (Paykull, 1798) n. syn.; Malthinus schaumii Gistel, 1857 = Malthinus biguttatus (Linnaeus, 1758) n. syn.; Malthinus anthracinus Gistel, 1857 = Malthinus frontalis (Marsham, 1802) n. syn.; Chauliognathus anaema (Gistel, 1857) nomen dubium; Chauliognathus interruptus Gistel, 1857 nomen dubium; Malthinus gentilis Gistel, 1857 nomen dubium; Malthinus umbrosus Gistel, 1857 nomen dubium; Malthodes phaeus Gistel, 1857 nomen dubium; Ellychnia marginicollis Gistel, 1857 comb. rest. et nomen dubium; Lampyris tristis Gistel, 1831 nomen dubium; Photuris fatuus Gistel, 1857 nomen dubium; Charactus hemichromus Gistel, 1857 comb. rest. et nomen dubium. The following type species is designated: Colophotia mehadiensis Faldermann, 1835 for Erota Gistel, 1834 (not Lampyris italica Linnaeus, 1767 as in BOUSQUET & BOUCHARD, 2017), and the correct type species of Oxypterus Gistel, 1834 is considered Lampyris maculata Fabricius, 1798 not De Geer, 1774, as indicated in BOUSQUET & BOUCHARD, 2017. In addition, Telephorus aeliani Gistel, 1856, Telephorus aristotelis Gistel, 1856, Telephorus hippocraticus Gistel, 1856, Telephorus pallidipes Gistel, 1848 (in 1856 cited as Cantharis pallidipes by Gistel), Callianthia dejeanii Gistel, 1834, Lampyris religiosa Gistel, 1856 and Dictyopterus maculicollis Gistel, 1848 (cited by Gistel also in 1856) are nomina nuda, and Telephorus vorax, Malthinus gentilis and Malthinus umbrosus also appear as nomina nuda one year before the description.
