Abstract - The species of the genus Archophileurus Kolbe, 1910 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Phileurini) from Argentina and adjacent countries are reviewed. Ten species are present in Argentina: Archophileurus aper Endrödi, 1977, dubious record; A. chaconus (Kolbe, 1910); A. fimbriatus (Burmeister, 1847); A. fodiens (Kolbe, 1910); A. foveicollis (Burmeister, 1847), new country record; A. ovis (Burmeister 1847), new country record; A. spinosus Dechambre, 2006, new country record; A. trituberculatus Endrödi, 1977, new country record; A. vervex (Burmeister, 1847); A. wagneri (Ohaus, 1911). New provincial records in Argentina are also given: A. chaconus (Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca, Misiones, Corrientes, Buenos Aires, San Juan, Mendoza, Río Negro, Chubut); A. fimbriatus (Chaco); A. fodiens (Jujuy, Santiago del Estero, Entre Ríos, Buenos Aires, La Pampa); A. foveicollis (Misiones); A. ovis (Misiones, Corrientes); A. spinosus (Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca, Tucumán, Santiago del Estero, La Rioja, Córdoba, Entre Ríos); A. trituberculatus (Misiones); A. vervex (Misiones, Santa Fe, Buenos Aires, Chubut), and A. wagneri (Córdoba). A new record for Bolivia (A. wagneri) is also given. A brief diagnosis of each species, a key to males, misidentifications, and distribution maps are provided.

Due nuove Typhloreicheia Holdhaus, 1924
dei Monti Nebrodi (Sicilia)
(Coleoptera, Carabidae, Scaritinae)

di

P. MAGRINI, A. PETRIOLI & A. BENELLI

Abstract - Two new Typhloreicheia Holdhaus, 1924 from the Nebrodi Mountains (Sicily) (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Scaritinae) - Two new taxa of the genus Typhloreicheia Holdhaus, 1924 are described from the Nebrodi Mountains (Sicily). The finding is interesting, since up to now species of this genus had never been reported from these mountains, the genus range resulting more widespread, extending to the north-east in the island. The two taxa are consistently different, and have thus to be considered non-conspecific. The northern one is similar to some of the species from the Trapanese (far west Sicily), from which it is mainly distinguished for the aedeagus shape; the southern one is related to the geographically closest Typhloreicheia binaghii Casale, 1985 from the Madonie Mountains, from which it is easily distinguished for the longer elytra and the proportionately much smaller aedeagus. The first is considered of species rank, T. stefanoi n. sp., the latter subspecies of T. binaghii: T. binaghii enricae n. subsp.

Abstract - Revision of the Duvalius Delarouzée, 1859 of the bensae and straneoi groups (sensu MAGRINI, 1997, 1998), with description of a new taxon (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Trechinae) - A new taxon from Umbria - Duvalius cirocchii pelosae n. ssp. (Mount la Pelosa, Polino, Terni) -, syntopic with Duvalius straneoi Jeannel, 1931, is here described. For the first time, a complete iconography of the male genitalia with their copulatory lamellae for all the Duvalius of the bensae and straneoi groups (sensu MAGRINI & VANNI, 1984, updated in MAGRINI, 1997-1998) is presented: the copulatory lamella of a topotypic male of Duvalius bensae (Gestro, 1892), never correctly figured, is also illustrated. Duvalius bensae lombardii Straneo, 1939 and Duvalius bensae faillai Magrini & Vanni, 1984 (for the former, a new locality is reported: Grotta di Monte Cucco [Cave of Mount Cucco] N° 17 U/Pg) are elevated to species rank: Duvalius lombardii Straneo, 1939 and Duvalius faillai Magrini & Vanni, 1984. The work better defines the bensae and straneoi groups, and gives a chronicle of the descriptions of the various taxa, distribution map and keys to them.

Abstract - A new Duvalius Delarouzée, 1859 from Marche and notes on Duvalius ruffoi Magistretti, 1956 (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Trechinae) - Duvalius carottii n. sp. is described from Marche (C Italy), Grotta Fredda N° 449 Ma/AP, Rio Garrafo, m 430 a.s.l., Acquasanta Terme (Ascoli Piceno). It is an anophthalmous, depigmented, medium-large sized species, belonging to the straneoi group (sensu MAGRINI, 1997, 1998), nominal subgroup, for the shape of the copulatory lamella. The aedeagus is large, short, hamate at apex as in the other species of the group, the copulatory lamella is well sclerified, with two parallel, pointed appendages joined at base that has a posterior margin distinctly arcuate, typical characteristic of the straneoi subgroup; a single, median, large appendage superimposed on the base is also present. Morphometric and iconographic data on a population of Duvalius ruffoi Magistretti, 1956 from the summit of Mount Sibilla (Sibillini Mountains) are also reported.

by

FABRIZIO FANTI

Abstract - A new fossil soldier beetle, embedded in Baltic amber, Malthodes michalskii n. sp. (Cantharidae Malthininae) is here described and compared with the similar, both extant and fossil, species. It would probably belong to the Malthodes brevicollis (an extant, widespread species) species-group, and it might also be related to the fossil M. sucini Kuśka & Kania. These affinities are discussed based on the last abdominal segments shape, characters which are paramount for the genus systematics.

New fossil Cantharidae genus and species from Baltic amber
(Insecta Coleoptera)

by

FABRIZIO FANTI

Abstract - A new fossil soldier beetle, Michalskantharis bursztynica gen. nov., sp. nov., is described from Baltic amber. The new genus is characterized by long filiform inflated antennae with a large number of antennomeres (17), until now unknown in any extant or fossil genus, long elytra and convex prothorax, which is slightly raised at the apical edge and strongly raised at the posterior edge. In the fossil Cantharidae, shape and number of antennal articles, which can assume a discrete diagnostic value, seem to vary significantly in comparison to extant species.

Contribution to the Knowledge of Slovenian Checkered Beetles
(Coleoptera: Cleridae)

by

ERIK TIHELKA

Abstract - Beetles of the family Cleridae have diverse natural histories and distribution ranges. Unfortunately, our knowledge on the latter is largely incomplete. This is especially apparent when studying Balkan Checkered beetles. In the present contribution, Thanasimus femoralis (Zetterstedt, 1828) and Tillus pallidipennis Bielz, 1850 are reported from Slovenia for the first time. Two unlabeled specimens of Tilloidea transversalis (Charpentier, 1825) and Opetiopalpus scutellaris (Panzer, 1797), that have not been reported from the territory before, likely originate from Slovenia as well. In addition, the rare clerid beetle, Dermestoides sanguinicollis (Fabricius, 1787), that was last reported from Slovenia in the 1870s, is deposited in the collections. Some of these species were last collected in the Slovenian territory over 50 years ago and their rediscovery would be interesting. Therefore, detailed information on the species biogeography and biology is provided.

Description of a new species of
Dorcus Macleay, 1819 from the Philippines
(Coleoptera, Lucanidae)

by

LUCA BARTOLOZZI & SHINJI NAGAI

Abstract - A new species of Dorcus Macleay, 1819 from the Island of Negros (Philippines, Central Visayas) is described based on a single male specimen. Dorcus yuukae n. sp. is compared to males of the closely related Dorcus parvulus (Hope in WESTWOOD, 1845), also from the Philippines, from which it mainly differs for the matt colour (instead of being shiny), the different shape of the mandibles and clypeus, the less strong punctation of mentum, the absence of any frontal tubercle, the presence of a prosternal process. The new species has also been compared to male specimens of Dorcus multicavus Mizunuma, 1994 from Indonesia (Sulawesi): the new taxon can be distinguished by its smaller size, and the different mandibular, clypeus and pronotum shapes.
